5.1 What is DNS (Domain Name System)?

The acronym DNS stands for “Domain Name System”. With the help of DNS, domain names that are easily identifiable by humans are transformed into server IP addresses. As soon as you type the domain you want in your browser, such as www.thematic-learning.es, it searches for the domain name on several DNS servers. You usually start searching on the router’s DNS server. From there, the desired domain name is searched on other DNS servers until it is found.

Once your browser receives the corresponding IP address, it can finally establish a connection with the desired web page. Thus, the Domain Name System allows you to communicate on a network without knowing the respective IP addresses.
