5.2 DDoS and DoS attacks

In computing, the non-availability of a service is called denial of service (DoS).

If this problem has an external intentional cause, it is called a denial of service or DoS attack. Here, the attacker directs more requests to a system than it can answer. In this way, network devices, operating systems, and servers can be prevented from responding to regular requests or only with a delay.

This attack is especially effective when a system faces requests from multiple computers. These DDoS attacks, unlike DoS attacks, are based on extensive botnets.
